I don’t know about you but I’m someone who likes to spend my money wisely—especially after the holidays when I’ve just received my credit card statement account. Ouchh!
Makeup being one of my passion, I spend quite a few bucks in the beauty supplies department each year and so do many of you out there I suppose. According to Money magazine’s video, the average woman will spend $15,000 during her lifetime on beauty products.
I’ve come to believe with experience that makeup products don’t necessarily have to be expensive to be of good quality. Sure, I like to invest in certain products sometimes. If I know for example they will last longer, or their texture or application delivers amazing results, or I know the ingredients will react better with my skin. However, I find nowadays, a lot of drugstore makeup brands offer affordable products that are just as good as the high-end makeup collections you find in specialized beauty shops. With this being said, let’s explore my best affordable drugstore makeup finds of 2017.
All prices are in Canadian dollars.
NYX Micro Brow Pencil ($12)
I tried lots of different drugstore brow pencils over the years but never seemed to find a good color to match my eyebrows. I was using the famous Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz ($21), but found it quite expensive. Then, my friend told me about NYX Micro Brow Pencil. I would say this is my top replica. The precise retractable tip creates hair-like strokes that blend perfectly with my sparse brows. For a natural finish, I use the brow brush on the opposite tip. Really practical! This pencil comes in 8 different shades. I use Ash Brown, a neutral medium brown suitable for most brunettes. Blondes: Go for either Taupe or Blonde.
Beauty Blender ($6)
I’ve talked about this before; this is a must-have tool in your makeup kit. This multifunction sponge is a great alternative to large and heavy makeup brushes and is much more affordable. It’s great for blending foundation, concealer and liquid products. It’s very easy to use and doesn’t take up to much space in my carry on makeup pouch. Great for travelers!
L’Oréal Infallible 24 Hours Lip Color Duo ($12)
I love long-lasting lipsticks because when I’m at work I don’t always have time to touch up my lips. When I heard this lipstick lasted 24 hours, I was very skeptical. I decided to give it a try. Wow! I was amazed about how long it would last on my lips. Maybe not quite as long as advertised but it still stays put a very long time. The tube comes with conditioning balm which hydrates the lips and offers a subtle shiny effect. The formula does not fade yet my lips still feel smooth, which is not always the case with most long-lasting lip products.
The rosy-beige colour palette is perfect for everyday wear. Here are a few tips on how to choose the perfect lipstick match for you.
Maybelline Master Precise Skinny Gel Eyeliner Pencil ($12)
Like me, you’ve probably been wearing eyeliner for many years. Since I discovered this gel pencil, it’s been a repeat purchase. I love this automatic 1.9mm micro-tip pencil because it delivers precise eyeliner application. The gel formula glides on smoothly—which I prefer over traditional pencils— and stays on all day without smudging (I buy the waterproof one). And it gets bonus points because it never needs to be sharpened, and the pink tube is easy to locate in my makeup bag. Morning time savers I appreciate a lot!
Comes in 3 different shades: Defining Black, Sharp Brown, Refined Charcoal. Tip: I use Defining Black in the inner rim of my upper eyelid to create a more rich-defined eye look.
Maybelline New York Volum’Exp The Rocket Mascara ($5)
Marcelle XTENSION PLUS Lengthening & Curling Mascara ($13)
My secret to long thick and full eyelashes is revealed to you ladies today! It’s these two mascaras. Mascara is the most popular beauty product. Even with the simplest makeup we love full and long lashes, you agree? However, you do not need to spend too much to have a powerful result. Also, it’s recommended to replace your mascara every 3 to 6 months to avoid risk of flakiness and bacteria. So, watch carefully for those prices. It can add up quickly.
The Maybelline adds lots of volume to my lashes and the plastic brush separates them well. The Marcelle lengthens and keeps my lashes well curled throughout the day. One coat of the Volum’ Exp and one coat of the Marcelle, and voilà: amazing lashes! Personally, I like the effect of combining the two, but I love them both separately as well. It all depends on the type of lashes you have and the intensity you are looking for. Tip : Curl your lashes before you apply mascara, it helps brighten up tired eyes.
Lastly, if I can give you extra quick tips to save money on makeup products, I would say: Don’t buy on impulse (happens to every one of us once in a while, don’t worry). Lots of drugstore products go on sale frequently. Make sure you do your research, read reviews, and if possible, ask for a sample, it’s better to try before you splurge!
Hope you’ve enjoyed reading this post. Please share your best affordable drugstore makeup finds. I would love to hear about them!
PS. This is not a Maybelline sponsored post at all. It’s just pure coincidence.
